Cold War: A Post-Revisioninst View of the Origins Essay Sorry no bib on this; it was an in-class handout. This got me a 40/40 in AP History. There are three main schools of thought that trace the origins of the Cold War. The Orthodox view is that the intransigence of Leninist ideology, the sinister dynamics of a totalitarian society, and the madness of Stalin (Doc 1) cause the Cold War. The Revisionists claim that American policy offered the Russians no real choiceand the United States used or deployed its preponderance of power (Doc 2) and these actions caused the Cold War. The Post-Revisionist position is that the Cold War was initiated both by the United States and the USSR. Through the analysis of documents and other sources, the actual cause of the war lies with both powers. Both powers caused the Cold War because, although the US and the USSR were allied during World War Two, the USSR and US had different ideologies and aims of the war that conflicted after the war was over and the threat that each power imposed on the other. The primary cause of the Cold War is the exceedingly bipolar systems of government that the USSR and the US were administered under. The US had a democracy and had, in April of 1945, just said farewell to one of the most liberal presidents that ever had been elected. By making many social reforms, President Roosevelt pulled the US out of the crippling depression and into on of the most prosperous decades ever. The aims of the US are evident in the Atlantic Charter, which was signed by Churchill and Roosevelt in August of 1914. According to the Charter, the US would seek no aggrandizement. respect the rights of all peoples to choose the form of government under which they will live. bring about the fullest collaboration between all nations. and seek the abandonment of the use of force (Doc 4). While still early in the war, the Atlantic Charter was later adopted by the United Nations and remains, to this day, one of the cornerstones of the western world. However, the other power that e merged still intact after the war, the USSR had a very different way of government and dissimilar aims of the war. The USSR was a communist nation and had Stalin its dictator. From the Soviet perspective, extending the borders of the USSR and dominating the formerly independent states of eastern Europe would provide security and would be proper compensation for the fearful losses the Soviet people had endured in the war (p. 1111). This shows that Soviet ambitions directly conflicted with the western doctrine as outlined in the Atlantic Charter. Stalin presented his views on the distinctive nature of the war that was being waged: . whosoever occupies a territory also imposes on it his social system. Everyone imposes his own system as far as his army has power to do so (Doc 8). These documents and accounts show that both the US and the USSR had governmental systems to which they deeply adhered and those systems were in close quarters in Europe after the war, which caused the tensions the heighten even more. They were not willing to try to make the spheres of influence coexist in peace, neither of them. Another factor that added to the tension between the two powers was the ultimate threat that they posed on each other. The condition in Europe after the war encouraged communism because there were starving citizens as well as wealthier citizens and this extreme and life-threatening example of class division encourage those to wish for total equality, the definition of communism. If countries such as France, Britain and the western half of Germany fell to communism, then the USSR would control the whole of Europe and perhaps become an insurmountable enemy just a the Atlantic away on one side and three miles on the other. The extent of the damage suffered by the city in air raids and form the other effects of the war were enormous. There was no gas, no water, no electric current and no means of transportation (Doc 5). Communism was beginning to look appealing to tho se downtrodden citizens in western Europe. Stalin, after alluding to the massive losses suffered by the USSR during the war, said:So what can there be surprise about the fact that the Soviet Union, anxious for its future safety, is trying to see to it that governments loyal in their attitude to the Soviet Union should exist in these countries? How can anyone describe these peaceful aspirations of the Soviet Union as expansionist tendencies on the part of our state? (Doc 20)Thus showing the USSRs wish to expand, even if for a noble cause. These threats to US influence and European security did not go unanswered by the US. In March of 1947, president Truman delivered his famous speech, the Truman Doctrine. One way of life is based upon the will of the majorityguarantees of individual libertyand freedom from political oppression. The second way of life is based upon terror and oppressionfixed electionsand the suppression of personal freedoms (#7). He goes on to ask for hundreds of mill ions of dollars to aid the masses in Europe, thus deterring them from becoming communist, and fundamentally declaring that the USs main goal is containing communism to the eastern half of Europe. He does this through harsh and generalizing comparisons between the communal way of life and the democratic but the message was clearly heard throughout the world. Through these documents, this is apparent that both the US and the USSR were very rigidly adhered to their cause and way of life, thus neither power was willing to compromise, which caused and already high tensions to further escalate into a period that lasted from the end of the war to, perhaps, 1989, when the USSR collapsed. Thus, through the very different ideologies of the US and the USSR and the hazard that each power imposed on the other and thus the fact that neither was willing to compromise with each other, the Cold War was initiated. These aspects of both USSR and US diplomacy caused a line to be drawn down the middle o f Europe with communist nations and influence on the eastern half and democratic on the west. An aspect that was declared in Churchills famous speech at a college in Missouri: An iron curtain has descended across the continent (Doc 19).

Well, looking at the before and after of this part it presents to me the climax of the debate between them. Up to this point Socrates is following along with the Idea of relating the different professions to arts since Trashcans thought he was witty to say Socrates did not know the shepherd from the sheep. It Is at this point In which I feel Trashcans cannot save himself and his stance any longer. Lets take a look at the build up to the climax; what has taken place before this to support it as the climax of the debate. Trashcans previous to this is trying to defend his position by saying that the unjust fairs off better than the just. I feel that this dialogue that he has given just completely goes off track of the topic. He tries to give a good punch with words, but instead he starts talking about this trying to cover from Just being told by off by Socrates and agreeing with everything he said previously, because he knows Socrates has put him in a corner at this point. How does he expect to rebound and make a comeback to defend his position like that? He cant so he moves completely away from it and attempts to make Socrates seem fallible with the statement that I previously mentioned of not knowing the shepherd from the sheep. Socrates Isnt stupid though, he knows what Trashcans Is doing when he does this as we see next. After Trashcans gives his ideas on the unjust it appears he is done and feels he has proved his point and is in attempt to vacate the debate. This brings me to my point after the climax. It is to me apparent, Socrates has won. Trashcans is only made out as a fool from then forward. He is tussled now that he has been pressured to remain in the conversation. It is apparent he still feels he has won as he sneers at Socrates when he says he is not convinced. As the reader I was not convinced either at his statement. Just following it, Socrates is able to take everything he has stated and has shown the falsity in his ideas. As Socrates goes on to question what Trashcans has stated In terms of what was previously discussed about the professions and arts, thus proving him wrong again. Aside from what actually took place In this debate It shows a clear example of the Socratic Method. Always ask questions about the question and question the answers to the question. One individual leads another to contradict himself strengthening the ay that the unjust faired out better than then Just, but Socrates turned it right back around and made him contradict himself again. Each of the poems have different meanings and are carefully constructed by the poet. She uses different themes in her poetry such as tea and grief, to illustrate Carol Ann Duffys point that many objects can be linked with love. Art is one of many poems from Carol Ann Duffys Rapture. In the poem, a person is speaking to their lover. The tone throughout the poem is depressing. It contains no positive thoughts on the topic of love and relationships. The person reminisces the love she/he had for her/his lover. The poem comes to a climax towards the end, this signifies the end of their relationship. The poem is set out as three stanzas containing four lines and a forth stanza, which is in fact a rhyming couplet. It is in sonnet form as it has fourteen lines, this is common for Shakespeare. Shakespeare also wrote romantic poetry so this reinforces the fact that this poem is a traditional poet focusing on the topic of love. We also observe systematics, their distribution, their genetics, their anatomy, their physiology, their ecology and conservation. In most cases they need food to provide them with energy for growth, reproduction, movement and even at rest (the basal metabolic rate). The wood antelope feeds on the grasses, shrubs and bushes, which contain cellulose, and the fossarial leaf rat feeds mostly, if not exclusively on leaves of certain trees, bushes and shrubs and so they also contain cellulose. So this particular bacteria plays a very important role in the lives of these primates (Govbson, et el, 1998, p. 100) The extraction of carbohydrates, vitamins, fats, proteins and minerals normally occur through some other body metabolisms, which also play a very important role in the growth and energy requirements of these primates. The extracts are also used in the bone formation, in this case proteins are used for this purpose and the minerals and vitamins are used for important functions in the bodies of the organisms (Leyh, 2007,p. 150) In any ecological systems there is competition among organisms for space mates and food. All these things that they compete for depend in one or another with the energy available. For instance, if an organism is to get an adequate space for himself, the organism has to fight for it and unless he is strong enough, it cannot be easy for him to get it. The American Heritage Dictionary defines law as 'a rule of conduct or procedure established by custom, agreement, or authority.'; Since even the most primitive forms of life have been known to live by some 'rule of conduct,'; by definition, law has existed before the dawn of the human race. However, no other species have adopted laws to fit their immediate needs more than humans. As groups of humans began living in larger and larger groups, competition for resources such as food, water, shelter, and even mating partners grew increasingly intense. Therefore, the leaders of these basic forms of society found it necessary to set guidelines for sharing and protecting these resources. As these societies grew in complexity, so did the need for laws. While in its nascent stage law primarily protected tangibles such as life, limb, and property, the scope of laws has grown to encompass moral values as well. However, these values often differed from society to society. With each passing year, more and more laws are coming into effect. Consequently, more and more people are growing incognizant of the laws that govern them. In effect, this ignorance of the law nullifies its effectiveness as a deterrent of crime. Therefore, modern law has taken a more passive role as a medium for holding people accountable for their actions. Voltaire once said that 'a multitude of laws in a country is like a great number of physicians, a sign of weakness and malady.'; Historically, laws have been created in an attempt to correct perceived problems within a society. An epidemic of adultery must have occurred before laws forbidding such activity came into existence. Several affluent members of society must have been robbed before anti-theft laws were passed. Undoubtedly a number of politicians were shot and killed before gun-control laws were believed to be necessary. For the most part laws are created out of fear of becoming victimized. As illustrated in the preceding examples, most laws are designed specifically to address crimes in which the distinction between an offender and a victim is clear. However, laws against so-called 'victimless'; crimes suggest that its intent exceeds that of mere protection. For instance, according to California Penal Code 286, 'sodomy is sexual conduct consisting of contact between the peni s of one person and the anus of another person. Any sexual penetra... ... person, simply relying on an individual's sense of morality in respect to self-government would result in inevitable sociological chaos. This holds especially true for those who lack the mental competency to differentiate between moral and immoral behavior. Although some laws have been proven to be effective deterrents of crime, this holds true only for those laws that are known to exist. Furthermore, it is necessary to remember that even the most severe of punishments will not deter the motivated criminal. Therefore, the very essence of law is reduced to a mere mechanism to hold people accountable for their actions or lack thereof. Accountability for the law, regardless of moral beliefs, must be applied unconditionally and without prejudice to all persons within the jurisdiction of the governing body in order to safeguard the law's effectiveness. Although this can be construed as 'force-feeding'; perceived moral beliefs upon the society as a whole, accountability is necessary t o insure that the violators of crimes are justly punished for their actions. Without such universal accountability, it would be impossible to apply laws upon a morally diverse and legally ignorant society.
